Any paper presented at WCSMO by a "young" researcher (under the age of 35) can be proposed as a recipient of the ISSMO/Springer Prize by any participant of that congress. The work should be entirely or primarily the young researchers; hence, a supervisor might also be on the paper, but the first author must be the nominee. The prize-winning paper will be selected by the ISSMO Executive Committee. Proposals, including a 50-word justification, are to be submitted to the e-mail address of the ISSMO Secretary General.

Report of Awardee Selection for ISSMO/Springer Prize 2007

It is my pleasure to report the result of the selection procedure for the awardee of ISSMO/Springer Prize 2007. The prize will be awarded at WCSMO-8 in 2009.

The winner selected is Mr. Ikjin Lee:

"Dimension Reduction Method (DRM) Based RBDO for Highly Nonlinear Systems," Ikjin Lee, K.K. Choi, Liu Du, and David Gorsich

The other 4 finalists are recognized here:

Cory J. Rupp:      "Topology Optimization of Large-Scale Phononic Surface Wave Devices and Meta-Materials," Cory J. Rupp, Anton Evgrafov, Martin L. Dunn, Kurt Maute

Yoojeong Noh:     "New Transformation of Dependent Input Variables Using Copula for RBDO," Yoojeong Noh, K.K. Choi, and Liu Du

Joong Seok Lee: "Poroelastic Acoustical Foam Design by Topology Optimization for Acoustical Performance Improvement," Joong Seok Lee, Eun Il Kim, Yoon Young Kim, Jung Soo Kim, and Yeon June Kang

Abdus Samad:     "Application of Multiple-Surrogate Model to Optimization of a Dimpled Channel," Abdus Samad, Ki-Don Lee, Kwang-Yong Kim, and Raphael T. Haftka

The 2007 Procedure Summarized

We have used a new selection procedure this time to attract a sizable number of recommendations for the nominees, unlike in the past when we had very limited nominees. The new procedure is summarized as following:

1)  Requesting recommendations from all session chairpersons of an excellent paper presented in his/her sessions, including poster sessions.

2)  Soliciting recommendations from ISSMO members, by announcing the "Call for Proposals for ISSMO/Springer Prize."

3)  The first round voting with each Executive Committee (EC) member voting for five finalist papers from the pool of qualified nominees. The qualification criterion is announced in the "Call for Proposals for ISSMO/Springer Prize." The five finalist papers are selected based on the number of votes each paper received. For this process, only the abstracts of these papers are reviewed by the EC members. In addition, the EC members who are co-authors of the qualified papers are excused from voting their co-authored papers, and thus vote for less than five top papers depending on the number of their co-authored papers.

4)  The second round voting with a full ranking of the five finalists. For this process the full papers are reviewed by the EC members. No EC members who are co-authors of the five finalist papers are involved in the voting. The winner was decided by the score calculated from the rankings.

The starting pool size was 67 papers. Twenty of them responded with brief (50 word) justifications for qualifications, as requested by the call for proposal, were taken as the legitimate candidates for the Prize.

It is finally noted that most of the EC members have agreed in that the procedure taken was fine. However, there is always room for improvements. Before making it a standard procedure for the future ISSMO/Springer Prize, we like to receive your input. Please send any improvement ideas or questions to Secretary General at the address, bmkwak@khp.kaist.ac.kr or bmkwak@kaist.edu, by the end of this year.

Fernando V. Stump (Brazil) and Gil Ho Yoon (Korea) were announced as winners of the ISSMO/Springer prize 2005 for the papers "Material Distribution Design of Functionally Graded Rotating Disks with Stress Constraint" and "Optimal Layout Design Using the Element Connectivity Parameterization Method: Application to Three-Dimensional Geometrical Nonlinear Structure", respectively, presented at WCSMO-6. Dr Yoon and Mr. Stump gave brief presentations on the subject of the winning papers, and President Martin P. Bendsøe handed over the diplomas to the winners.

Dr. Byeng Dong Youn has been selected as recipient of 2003 ISSMO/Springer Prize for Young Scientist. Among four nominations for the prize, Dr. Youn received the highest number of EC member votes. The title of the presentation is "Efficient Evaluation Approaches for Probabilistic Constraints in Reliability-Based Design Optmization," that is coauthored with K.K. Choi and R.-J. Yang. The prize has been awarded in the General Assembly Meeting during WCSMO-6 in Rio de Janeiro, 2005.

Dr. Erik Lund and Dr. Kang-Soo Park have been selected as recipients of the 2001 ISSMO/Springer Prize for Young Scientist.

The Prize is awarded to Dr. Lund and Dr. Park for excellent presentations and contents of outstanding papers read at ISSMOs Fourth World Congress of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (WCSMO-4) held in Dalian, China, June 4-8, 2001.

From among nine young scientists nominated for the Prize by the members of ISSMO, Dr. Lund and Dr. Park both received the highest number of the Executive Committees' votes. Due to this tie the Committee decided that Dr. Lund and Dr. Park should share the Prize.

Dr. Erik Lund (Aalborg University, Denmark, el@ime.auc.dk ) receives the Prize for the paper "Shape Design Optimization of Stationary Fluid-Structure Interaction Problems with Large Displacements and Turbulence" that is co-authored with Henrik M?ler and Lars Aaes Jakobsen.

Dr. Kang-Soo Park (KAIST, South Korea, pgsoo@kaist.ac.kr ) is selected as recipient of the Prize for the paper "Topology Optimization of the Primary Mirror of a Multi-Spectral Camera" which is co-authored with Su-Young Chang and Sung-Kie Youn.

Both prize-winning papers can be seen in the Proceedings of WCSMO-4.

In connection with the next World Congress of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (WCSMO-5) to be held in Lido di Jesolo, Italy, in May 2003, Dr. Lund and Dr. Park will be both invited to give a brief presentation of their winning papers, and the Prizes will be handed over to them at a small ceremony during the General Assembly Meeting.
