Any paper presented at WCSMO by a "young" researcher (under the age of 35) can be proposed as a recipient of the ISSMO/Springer Prize by any participant of that congress. The work should be entirely or primarily the young researchers; hence, a supervisor might also be on the paper, but the first author must be the nominee. The prize-winning paper will be selected by the ISSMO Executive Committee. Proposals, including a 50-word justification, are to be submitted to the e-mail address of the ISSMO Secretary General.

The 2007 Procedure Summarized
We have used a new selection procedure
this time to attract a sizable number of recommendations for the nominees,
unlike in the past when we had very limited nominees. The new procedure is
summarized as following:
1) Requesting recommendations from all
session chairpersons of an excellent paper presented in his/her sessions,
including poster sessions.
2) Soliciting recommendations from ISSMO
members, by announcing the "Call for Proposals for ISSMO/Springer
Prize."
3) The first round voting with each Executive
Committee (EC) member voting for five finalist papers from the pool of qualified
nominees. The qualification criterion is announced in the "Call for
Proposals for ISSMO/Springer Prize." The five finalist papers are selected
based on the number of votes each paper received. For this process, only the
abstracts of these papers are reviewed by the EC members. In addition, the EC
members who are co-authors of the qualified papers are excused from voting
their co-authored papers, and thus vote for less than five top papers depending
on the number of their co-authored papers.
4) The second round voting with a full
ranking of the five finalists. For this process the full papers are reviewed by
the EC members. No EC members who are co-authors of the five finalist papers are
involved in the voting. The winner was decided by the score calculated from the
rankings.
The starting pool size was 67 papers.
Twenty of them responded with brief (50 word) justifications for
qualifications, as requested by the call for proposal, were taken as the
legitimate candidates for the Prize.
It is finally noted that
most of the EC members have agreed in that the procedure taken was fine.
However, there is always room for improvements. Before making it a standard
procedure for the future ISSMO/Springer Prize, we like to receive your input.
Please send any improvement ideas or questions to Secretary General at the
address, bmkwak@khp.kaist.ac.kr or bmkwak@kaist.edu, by the end of this year.
